For many of us, gardening is a moonlight pastime, something done either only on weekends or on some special days. When you’re not doing much with your gardening tools for a while, you should have them stored in a way that’ll guarantee quick, easy reuse when the time comes. You’d want all your gardening tools stacked neatly in storage, not lying around, causing an eyesore and obstructing movement around the yard.

Tips for Organising Your Gardening Tools

Gardening becomes easier and more enjoyable when your gardening tools are better organised in the storage.

Sort out the tools and store them in different storage units based on their sizes. Larger items like spades, shovels, and rakes can go up on a hanging wall unit. Seeds and other small items should be organised into different compartments in a plastic bin or storage box.

If some items can’t fit into the boxes you have at hand, store them in wrapping sheets. Spread a towel or sheets of bubble wrap on the floor, then place the tools on the sheets or towel, and then fold them up. You can stash them away from sight in your closet, under a table or bench, etc.

Weather-proofing your Mow and Large Equipment

If you won’t be using your mow or large equipment for a long time, then you should take precautions when storing them to ensure they’re serviceable when you need them. First, you need to make sure they’re in the best shape and work-ready when sending them to storage. Clean them thoroughly – take time with the different parts. Oil them properly, but drain out the fuel since fuel degrades over a certain period of inactivity. Take out the spark plug, cover them properly, and store them in a cool, dry room.

This is really important for your large equipment, but the same thing goes for all your gardening tools. Always make sure to clean them all up, oil them up, and sharpen their blades where applicable, before stashing them away.

Store on an Elevated Surface

It’s never advisable to keep your belongings directly on the bare floor. That’s because the humidity and temperature levels near the floor are usually less-conducive for storing things. Raise your stored gardening tools with either a wooden block or some padding of some sort.

Know What to Store in Sealed Containers

If you have leftovers of packaged goods like fertilisers and herbicides, make sure to seal them properly before storing them. Keep them in airtight plastic bins, zip bags, or covered buckets. Toxic items should be sealed properly and stored in locker compartments to prevent unauthorised access.

Your gloves should also go into a compartment that’s sealed air-tight to protect them from the elements, bugs, etc.

Use an Outdoor Shed

Ideally, you should have a corner of your garden dedicated to storing your gardening tools. A small shed that’s right next to your garden not only makes it convenient to store your tools but also enhances your kerb appeal provides more storage to free up space indoors and ultimately makes your gardening and outdoor lifestyle more enjoyable.
