How to Keep an Expedient Storage Inventory in 4 Easy Steps

Having a hard time organising your home or office with clutter everywhere? You can bring order to the chaos by taking advantage of self-storage units.

One of the best ways to maximise your self-storage unit is by keeping an inventory of your stored items. With an inventory, you’ll be able to retrieve any stored item whenever you need them, keep track of your business supplies, and also maximise every inch of the storage space. All these can add up to give you more peace of mind about your belongings.

Here are three crucial steps that’ll help you easily keep an inventory:

Choose the Right Inventory Tools

There are modern inventory tools like apps, spreadsheets, etc. that can help you easily compute your inventory. But for some people, a good-old-fashioned pen and paper make for an inventory list that’s much easier to access.

You need to choose a method of inventorying that allows you to account for as many details as possible without a hassle. You should be able to turn to your inventory list anytime to find anything from your documents, shoes and clothing, sports gear, etc.

If you’re using digital tools like Excel spreadsheets or inventory apps like MyStuff2Pro or Memento Database, it’s advisable to have a hard copy of the inventories handy so you can access it offline or without any device.

Create Your List

Now, you need to take stock of everything that’ll go into the self-storage unit. These should be items you don’t need on a daily basis, archived office files, seasonal items, and long-term supplies.

After putting down the items, group them into categories and sub categories. That way, you won’t have to scour through a long list every time you need to find something. You can simply navigate to the category or subcategory to find exactly where the items are stored much quicker. You can organise the list on a room-by-room basis or based on how frequently you want to access the items.

Organise Your Storage Unit

Use your inventory list as a guide to organising your self-storage. And while packing, take all the time you need and use the right packing tools and materials to avoid damaging your items. Store archived files in cardboard boxes or plastic bins, wrap frail items like artwork, breakables, etc. in bubble wraps or other types of wrapping sheets. It’s also very important to labels the boxes and wrapping sheets appropriately.

Store the items you’ll need sooner closer to the doorway and create an aisle that’ll help you easily reach the back of the unit.

Create a Map

You can complement your inventory with a visual rendition of your storage unit. Create a storage map capturing as many details as possible of your storage unit. That way, you can simply glance through the map and know exactly where to look for any item. The map can be a simple 1D or 2D diagram showing the layout of the storage unit and its various sections and compartments.

With these organising tips, finding any of your stored items will be a piece of cake at all times.
